5 reasons to send thank you letters now more than ever

5 reasons to send thank you letters now more than ever5 reasons to send thank you letters now more than everThis targeted self-marketing tool can get you to the next round interview thank you letters.Think of thank-you letters as a self-marketing tool and a critical component of your job-search strategy. The time you invest crafting a targeted thank-you letter after an interview is time well spent, and it will help you create a credible and efficient search.Dont believe me? Here are five reasons why you should incorporate thank-you letters into your search strategy1) A thank-you letter creates an opportunity to re-connect with employers.Chances are you arent the only candidate being interviewed for an open position. Writing a follow-up letter allows you to build a relationship with the interviewer and develop rapport. By expressing your gratitude for the interview and recapping the highlights of the meeting, you revisit the reasons why you are the best fit for the position.2) Followi ng up keeps your candidacy top of mind.A candidate often makes the mistake of putting too much control in the interviewers hands. He believes that if hes the best candidate, the interviewer will remember him and keep him in the loop regarding the selection process. Unfortunately, this doesnt often happen. Its critical that a candidate remind prospective employers of his interest in a position. The thank-you letter is the perfect vehicle for communicating this interest.3) Written correspondence gives you another chance to sell your strengths. While the thank-you letter expresses gratitude for the meeting, it also serves a much more strategic purpose. It provides an opportunity for the candidate to present her skills and accomplishments in another format and market the value shell add to the employer.4) The document enables you to address points you neglected to discuss during the interview. Many candidates, after leaving the interview, think of other things they could have said during the meeting. Dont label this a liability turn it into an asset by discussing these points in the thank-you letter. Remind the reader of your ability to produce similar results for their organization.5) A letter helps develop rapport and increases the employers comfort level in your candidacy.A good strategy is to recap a part of the conversation where you and the interviewer shared similar views on a job-related topic. The thank-you letter can also be a forum for demonstrating your consultative problem-solving skills. By addressing current issues the employer is facing and proposing solutions, you are contributing to the companys success even before you are onboard.Thank you letters continue to be an important component of a successful job-search campaign. But the focus has shifted from a simple courtesy and show of appreciation to a targeted self-marketing tool. By creating a letter that validates your candidacy, builds rapport and reminds the reader of your value added, you can si gnificantly influence potential employers and - most importantly - increase your chances for subsequent interviews.

They Want a Resume AND a Job Application Seriously!

They Want a Resume AND a Job Application SeriouslyThey Want a Resume AND a Job Application? Seriously? They Want a Resume AND a Job Application SeriouslyHiedi from Springfield, MO asks When we hand in a resume to a company, why do we need to also fill out an application? Dont they have exactly the same information? After all, a resume seems to be just a more detailed application.Great question, Hiedi Hundreds of companies make you submit form-style applications along with your online resume, or ask you to fill one out on paper before the interview. How annoyingBut there are a few good (and not so good) reasons why employers do this. Heres what I can think ofBackground checks. The application asks for information that you dont normally include on a resume, such as Social Security Number, drivers license number, military experience, etc, which is all important for conducting hintergrund checks.Comparison purposes. When companies interview dozens of candidates, they might find it hard to keep track of whos who based solely on resumes. Job applications can help them tell you apart and compare certain parts of your experience against others.Resume types. The most standard resume format is chronological, which is straightforward and leaves little to the imagination. But functional or hybrid resumes can conceal or skew employment dates, making the employer work extra hard to figure out what you were doing in May 2002 if it doesnt appear on your resume. Most job applications ease that stress by requesting employment history in order of dates.Salary tricks. Standard applications ask for starting and final wage/salary from your previous jobs, and some ask for the minimum salary youll be willing to take for your next job. When it comes to salary negotiations, whoever specifies a number first is at a disadvantage. So an employer can get the upper hand by making you reveal your income history on the application. Its a test. If you really want the job, youll go the extra mile to fill out the application. It could be seen as a way to weed out applicants who arent completely serious about getting the job. It also reveals how well you can follow instructions and express yourself.Whatever the motivation is behind this extra and seemingly unnecessary step, you have to fill out the application if you really want the job.

Are you living the dream

Are you living the dream Are you living the dream?Posted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunIf you could work for any organisation, what would it be? A recent survey revealed that many Australians and New Zealanders dream of working for employers who allow them to travel, be creative or be technologically innovative or dream of working for themselves. The Dream Employers Uncovered 2010 survey, run by RedBalloon and Insync, asked alfruchtwein 3000 Australian and New Zealand employees to nominate their dream employer and here are the organisations that came out on top 1. Google? 2. Virgin ?3. Self-employment? 4. Apple ?5. Qantas ?6. Walt Disney? 7. OMD? 8. Sydney Water? 9. Getaway ?10. Coca-ColaOther companies to make it into the top 20 include Microsoft, Vodafone, Lonely Planet and the ABC.What dreams are made ofIn the eyes of employees, the two most important company attributes are a positive brand/reputation and a fun, healthy culture. Eighty per cent of Dream Employers promote a fu n working environment, but its Google, with its strong brand and culture, that led the pack. At Google we believe that a strong culture and an atmosphere of fun, integrity, and creativity contribute to the productivity of our employees. Googlers believe in the company they work for and truly enjoy coming to work each day, says Joe Krayer, HR Director, Google Australia. Also important are the provision of a healthy worklife balance, rewards and recognition, and the ability of employees to pursue their interests. At Disney, the feel good factor of making people happy is a huge incentive to its workers. The identity of the CEO is generally of little importance to most employees except in the case of Virgin, whose reputation rides on the charisma and positive image of Richard Branson, as well as its culture of fun. With constant images of Branson partying with his staff in the news, Virgin looks like one fun place to work with a great culture and leader. I hang out with my people when I travel, party with them. Apart from the fact I like it you have to be available to your people. As Branson said at a recent Business Chicks Breakfast in Sydney Our people need to be 100 per cent proud of where they work and believe in what they do every day.Be your own bossWith 73 per cent of Australian and NZ workers not working for their Dream Employer, many look to self-employment as a way to attain the kind of worklife balance, personal interest, flexibility and autonomy they yearn for. Only 12 per cent of those surveyed were working for themselves, but many more wish they were. Ask those who actually work for themselves, however, and it seems that the dream is not quite everything its cracked up to be. Those who are self-employed arent much happier than employed workers, and many work long hours though at least they work when they want and because they want to, not because they have to. Those who most want to work for themselves are Baby Boomer males, who after ye ars in the workforce are usually financially well-established and now want to pursue their dream of becoming their own Dream Employer. 17 psychological tricks to make people like you immediately

17 psychological tricks to make people like you immediately17 psychological tricks to make people like you immediatelyMost friendships develop so naturally that you dont even realize how or when they started. But sometimes you want to make an effort to befriend a new acquaintance or become a better friend to existing pals. Using tricks and techniques likemirroring, subliminal touching, smiling, and letting that other partie talk about themselves can make you appear mora likable. We scured the psychological research on the science of attraction to find strategies to get people to like you.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and mora1. Copy themThis strategy is called mirroring and it involves subtly mimicking the other persons behavior. When talking to someone, try copying their body language, gestures, and facial expressions. In 1999, New York University researchers documented thechameleon effec t,which occurs when people unconsciously mimic each others behavior, and that mimicry facilitates liking.Researchers had 78 men and women work on a task with a partner, who welches really a confederate working for the researchers. The partners engaged in different levels of mimicry, while researchers secretly videotaped the interactions. At the end of the interaction, the researchers had participants indicate how much they liked those partners.Sure enough, participants were more likely to say that they liked their partner when their partner had mimicked their behavior.2. Spend more time around themAccording to the mere-exposure effect, people tend to like things that are familiar to them.Knowledge of this phenomenon dates back to the 1950s, whenMIT researchers discoveredthat college students who lived closer together in housing projects were more likely to be friends than students who lived farther apart. This could be because students who live close by can experience more passive, d ay-to-day interactions with each other, such as greeting each other in the common room or kitchen. Under certain circumstances, those interactions can develop into full-fledged friendships.Psychologists at the University of Pittsburghhad four women pose as students in a university psychology class. Each woman showed up to class a different number of times. When experimenters showed male students pictures of the four women, the men demonstrated a greater affinity for the women theyd seen more often in class - even though they hadnt interacted with any of them.Taken together, these findings suggest that simply spending more time with people can make them like you more. Even if you dont live near your friends, try sticking to a steady routine with them, such as going out for coffee every week or taking a class together.3. Compliment others.People will associate the adjectives you use to describe other people with your personality. This phenomenon is called spontaneous trait transferen ce.One study foundthat this effect occurred even when people knew certain traits didnt describe the people who had talked about them.Whatever you say about other people influences how people see you, says Gretchen Rubin, the author ofThe Happiness Project. If you describe someone else as genuine and kind, people will also associate you with those qualities. The reverse is also true If you are constantly trashing people behind their backs, your friends will start to associate the negative qualities with you as well.4. Be in a great mood.Emotional contagion describes what happens when people are strongly influenced by the moods of other people. According to aresearch paperfrom the Ohio University and the University of Hawaii, people can unconsciously feel the emotions of those around them.If you want to make others feel happy when theyre around you, do your best to communicate positive emotions.5. Make friends with their friends. The social-network theory behind this effect is called tri adic closure, which means that two people are likely to be closer when they have a common friend. To illustrate this effect, students at the University of British Columbiadesigned a programthat friends people on Facebook at random. They found that people were more likely to accept their friend request as their number of mutual friends increased - from 20% with no mutual friends to close to 80% with more than 11 mutual friends.6. Dont be complimentary all the time. The gain-loss theory of interpersonal attractiveness suggests that your positive comments willhave more of an influenceif you deliver them only occasionally.A 1965 studyby University of Minnesota researchers shows how this theory might work in practice. Researchers had 80 female college students work in pairs on a task and then allowed those students to overhear their partners talking about them. In reality, experimenters had told the partners what to say.In one scenario, the comments were all positive in a second scenario, the comments were all negative in a third, the comments went from positive to negative and in a fourth, the comments went from negative to positive. As it turns out, students liked their partners best when the comments went from positive to negative, suggesting that people like to feel that theyve won you over in some capacity.Bottom line Although its counterintuitive, try complimenting your friends less often.7. Be warm and competent.Social psychologistSusan Fiske proposedthe stereotype content model, a theory that people judge others based on their warmth and competence.According to the model, if you can portray yourself as warm - noncompetitive and friendly - people will feel like they can trust you. If you seem competent - for example, if you have high economic or educational status - theyre more inclined to respect you.Harvard psychologistAmy Cuddy saysthat, especially in business settings, its important to demonstrate warmth first andthencompetence. From an evolutionary per spective, Cuddy writes in her book Presence, it is more crucial to our survival to know whether a person deserves our trust.8. Reveal your flaws from time to time.According to the pratfall effect, people will like you more after you make a mistake - but only if they believe you are usually a competent person. Revealing that you arent perfect makes you more relatable and vulnerable toward the people around you.The researcher Elliot Aronsondiscovered this phenomenonwhen he studied how simple mistakes can affect perceived attraction. He asked male students from the University of Minnesota to listen to tape recordings of people taking a quiz. When people did well on the quiz but spilled coffee at the end of the interview, the students rated them higher on likability than when they did well on the quiz and didnt spill coffee or didnt do well on the quiz and spilled coffee.9. Emphasize your shared values.According to a classicstudy by Theodore Newcomb, people are more attracted to those w ho are similar to them. This is known as the similarity-attraction effect. In his experiment, Newcomb measured his subjects attitudes on controversial topics, such as sex and politics, and then put them in a University of Michigan-owned house to live together.By the end of their stay, the subjects liked their housemates more when they had similar attitudes about the topics that were measured. If youre hoping to get friendly with someone, try to find a point of similarity between you two and highlight it.10. Casually touch them. This is known as subliminal touching, which occurs when you touch a person so subtly that they barely notice. Common examples include tapping someones back or touching their arm, which can make them feel more warmly toward you.In aUniversity of Mississippi and Rhodes College experimentthat studied the effects of interpersonal touch on restaurant tipping, waitresses briefly touched customers on the hand or shoulder as they were returning their change. As it turns out, they earned significantly larger tips than waitresses who didnt touch their customers.11. Smile whenever you can.In one study, nearly 100 undergraduate women looked at photos of another woman in one of four poses smiling in an open-body position, smiling in a closed-body position, not smiling in an open-body position, or not smiling in a closed-body position. Results suggested that the woman in the photo was liked most when she was smiling, regardless of her body position.BonusAnother studysuggested thatsmiling when you first meet someonehelps ensure theyll remember you later.12. See the other person how they want to be seen.People want to be perceived in a way that aligns with their own beliefs about themselves. This phenomenon is described as the self-verification theory. We all seek confirmations of our views, positive or negative. For aseries of studiesat Stanford University and the University of Arizona, participants with positive and negative perceptions of themselves were asked whether they wanted to interact with people who had positive or negative impressions of them. The participants with positive self-views preferred people who thought highly of them, while those with negative self-views preferred critics. This could be because people like to interact with those who provide feedback consistent with their known identity.Other researchsuggests that, when peoples beliefs about us line up with our own, our relationship with them flows more smoothly. Thats likely because we feel understood, which is an important component of intimacy.13. Tell them a secret.Self-disclosure may be one of the best relationship-building techniques. In a studyled by Arthur Aron, at Stony Brook University, college students were paired off and told that they should spend 45 minutes getting to know each other better.Experimenters provided some student pairs with a series of questions to ask, which got increasingly deep and personal. For example, one of the intermediate questio ns was How do you feel about your relationship with your mother? Other pairs were given small-talk-type questions. One question was What is your favorite holiday? Why?At the end of the experiment, the students whod asked increasingly personal questions reported feeling much closer to each other than students whod engaged in small talk. You can try this technique on your own as youre getting to know someone. For example, you can build up from asking them about their last trip to the movies to learning about the people who mean the most to them in life. When you learn intimate information about another person, they are likely to feel closer to you and want to confide in you in the future.14. Expect good things from people.According to the Pygmalion effect, people treat others in ways that are consistent with their expectations of them and therefore cause the person to behave in a way that confirms those expectations. In aHarvard Magazine article, Cuddy says, If you think someones a jerk , youll behave toward them in a way that elicits jerky behaviors. On the other hand, if you expect someone to be friendly toward you, they are more likely to behave in a friendly manner toward you.15. Act like you like them.Psychologists have known for a while about a phenomenon called reciprocity of liking When we think someone likes us, we tend to like them as well.Inone study, for example, participants were told that certain members of a group discussion would probably like them. These group members were chosen randomly by the experimenter. After the discussion, participants indicated that the peopletheyliked best were the ones who supposedly liked them.16.Display a sense of humor.Researchfrom Illinois State University and California State University at ab gehts Angeles found that, regardless of whether people were thinking about their ideal friend or romantic partner, having a sense of humor was really important.Meanwhile, not having a sense of humor, especially at the office, cou ld backfire. One study of 140 Chinese workers between 26 and 35 found that people were less well liked and less popular among their colleagues if they were morally focused. That means they placed a high value on displaying caring, fairness, and other moral traits. The researchers said that that was because morally focused people were perceived as less humorous by their colleagues.17. Let them talk about themselves.Harvard researchersrecently discoveredthat talking about yourself may be inherently rewarding, the same way that food, money, and sex are.In one study, the researchers had participants sit in an fMRI machine and respond to questions about either their own opinions or someone elses. Participants had been asked to bring a friend or family member to the experiment, who was sitting outside the fMRI machine. In some cases, participants were told that their responses would be shared with the friend or relative in other cases, their responses would be kept private. Results showed th at the brain regions associated with motivation and reward were most active when participants were sharing information publicly - but also when they weretalking about themselves, even if no one was listening. In other words, letting someone share a story or two about their life instead of blabbing on about yours could give them more positive memories of your interaction. This article originally appeared on Business Insider. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

5 Tips for Nailing a Phone Screen

5 Tips for Nailing a Phone Screen5 Tips for Nailing a Phone ScreenIm a millennial, and I hate talking on the phone. In other news, the sky is blue. Its notlage that Im afraid of talking on the phone- I do it. I just dont like it. And I dont like it because I find theres a disconnect. In an email, youve got pretty much all the time in the world to get your point across, use the right words, and strike the right tone. And in person, you can read a persons expressions and body language to get a sense of how the conversation is going, which is ideal in an interview scenario. A phone call has none of that- both you and your conversation partner are just disembodied voices. The phone screen or phone interview is often the first hurdle that you need to clear in getting a job but, because you cant really see how a person is responding to your conversation, it adds another layer of removal from the situation and thus another level of anxiety. Here, Ill get into some ways you can set yourself u p for success during a phone screen.1.HousekeepingNo, dont clean your house. (Although, in a Skype interview, youll probably want to do that- or at least the space directly behind you.) I just mean make koranvers you take care of all the nuts and bolts. Find a quiet space to take the call (i.e., kick your roommates or your kids out of the room), charge your phone, and make sure youve taken it off Do Not Disturb mode from the movies last night. I know this sounds like really simple advice that no one could possibly need reminding of- but have you ever forgotten to pack your deodorant for vacation? Exactly. So just double check- nothing could be more embarrassing than your phone going dead right as youre saying that your personal motto is Be prepared.2.Dont Chew Gum. Do Take Names.Listen up, hiring manager Im here to kick butt, take names, and chew bubblegum. And Im all out of bubblegum.Im sorry, I had to fit that in here somewhere. For real, though- you better be all out of bubblegum during a phone (or any) interview. No gum, no food, and ideally no drinks, but I wont make a hard-and-fast rule about it. The person youre talking to can absolutely hear you masticating on the other end of the line, regardless of how sneaky you think youre being. And, to fully justify my reference, be sure to get the name and contact info of your interviewer. One, it makes it that much easier to follow up after the interview. And two, when you go in for an in-person interview, itll be nice to have that persons name at your disposal rather than waiting anxiously for them to reintroduce themselves.3.Use a Crib SheetIts not cheating, its using your resources. This is one instance in which a phone screen is actually awesome- you can take as many notes as you want beforehand and, as long as youre not rustling pages, you can reference them all you like. I do this constantly- I jot down the companys important clients and business partners, the names of people in my potential department, an d a little blurb about me for the dreaded Tell me about yourself question. For one, writing it all down makes me feel more prepared beforehand. But it also makes for easy referencing if my mind goes totally leer in the interview. Just make sure that if you do write out answers to questions, youre not just reading off your notes. Think of them like index cards for a speech Theyre there to remind you of your main points, but you shouldnt be entirely dependent on them.4.Be Comfortable- Even If Comfortable Is a Little WeirdIts probably for the best that I dont make too many phone calls- Id wear a meandering path in the floor of my apartment. Its not even an anxiety thing, exactly. I just wander. If youre a phone pacer, thats fine- pace Use wild hand gestures Do what you gotta do to burn off nerves. I know its a little nerve-racking not being able to see your interviewers face, but they also cant see you- take advantage of that. That said, dont get too comfortable. Even though your interv iewer cant see you, you should definitely get up, get dressed in something semi-professional, do your hair, and all that before taking the call. Itll help you get into the mindset of making an impression.5.Take NotesPencils ready, yall. Remember what I was saying about taking down your interviewers contact info? You should also be writing down the main points of what they say. As the first step in the interviewing process, phone screens are often quite informative- this is your chance to get a good feel for the company, for the qualities needed in the position, for the personality of at least this potential member of your team, things like that. This is important info, and while you shouldnt be hyper-focused on writing everything down, make sure you jot down the fruchtwein important points. Itll help you when you go in for the in-person interview- youll be able to demonstrate that you were listening, and youll know the notes to hit on the second round.

Productivity Tips for Working Smarter Not Harder

Productivity Tips for Working Smarter Not Harder Productivity Tips for Working Smarter Not Harder The days when almost everyone worked 9-to-5 schedules are over. Many employers have the expectation that you’ll be connected- and available- even when you’re not in the office. Workloads are heavier, and demands for productivity are higher. Employees are required to work smarter and more efficiently than ever to achieve all this. It can result in burnout for many, but it becomes an opportunity for others to innovate and stand out from the crowd. You can lower your stress level and improve your work performance if you adopt the right combination of time-management practices. Set Progress Goals Youll seldom achieve absolute perfection, and its almost always unnecessary anyway. Perfectionism can lead to micromanaging, poor relationships with coworkers, procrastination, low productivity, depression, stress, and anxiety. The most successful people are those who  are satisfied when a jobs been completed with the best possible effort. They save their need for perfection for truly important things. Regularly forcing yourself to acknowledge any progress, no matter how small, will help you feel more positive and energetic. Youll always be more productive if you focus on progress over perfection. Use Batching Constantly checking and answering your email, voicemail, and other messages only interrupts your workday and your train of thought. It can hamper productivity, especially in jobs that require creative, innovative, or strategic thinking. Learn to respond to incoming messages in batches, and consider checking them just two  or  three times a day- unless, of course, keeping on top of them is integral to your job. Even then, try to schedule times to check in. Stay clear otherwise. Make use of the Do, Delegate, Delete, or File principle for dealing with emails, letters, bills, text messages, voice messages, and other requests. Integrate Technology You Already Know... Youre  probably familiar with a number of computer programs and mobile apps that can cut the time of accomplishing certain tasks in half. Take a moment to see how some of these programs or tools can speed up your professional work or make it better. Much of this software is often underutilized. Getting used to making technology a part of your workday might feel clunky at first, particularly if youre old school, but your productivity should be much higher when you get used it. ...And Learn New Technology Search for top productivity software applications and invest a little time on your own to learn them. Many of these programs offer tutorials for free or at  low cost. Some companies will pay for you to get certified in certain software programs. Numerous digital tools can help you organize a wide array of customer and product details, allowing for quick and easy recall. Also consider adopting a personal scheduling program that lets keep and organize calendars, to-do lists, work plans, and  contact  directories. Get Help From Your Team You dont have to do it all yourself. Other people are capable of handling some of the tasks you generally reserve for yourself, particularly if you work on a team. Taking some extra time to discuss with others what needs to be done might  reveal that some of your responsibilities fall under a different job description. Consider which duties you could be sharing with others, then slowly start parceling some of them out. It will allow you to focus on high-priority issues while giving your coworkers a chance to grow and shine. Dont Be Afraid to Say “No” Learn to decline politely but firmly whenever possible if someone asks you to do something that isnt your priority. Remind yourself that saying no to one thing gives you the freedom to say yes to something else thats more important and worthy of your time and skills. Youre far more likely to let someone down by not finishing everything on your plate than by declining to take on additional tasks. Take a Break Even the busiest people need to clear their minds and stretch their legs now and then. Take a five- to 10-minute breather once in a while. Use that time to take a brisk walk outside or even around the office. Do some stretching exercises, or walk up and down the stairs a few times. Drink water. Eat a healthy snack. Stepping away from your work briefly will relax your body and rejuvenate your mind. You might even find that youre less frazzled when you return home after hours. Ask for Help Dont suffer in silence if youre overwhelmed and its causing you undue stress. Be transparent with your peers and supervisors, at least as much as possible. Untenable work situations can usually be alleviated if you communicate clearly about whats going on. The sooner you can inform your team members, the better. You should be able to foresee workload issues if youve been at your job for a while. Nothing is worse than realizing you won’t make it just before a huge deadline. The Bottom Line Use technology to boost your productivity: Take advantage of productivity-boosting programs and apps.Ask for help: Dont be afraid to ask if you need assistance with a project or help managing workplace stress.Take a break: A break of even a few minutes can help you refocus and get back on track when youre feeling overwhelmed.Talk with a professional counselor: Talk with a professional or therapist if achieving a  balanced life continues to be a challenge for you or if  youre experiencing chronic workplace stress. If your employer has an employee assistance program (EAP), check to see how the program might help.

Reasons Why Youre Not Getting a Second Interview

Reasons Why You’re Not Getting a Second Interview Reasons Why You’re Not Getting a Second Interview Job searching is full of frustrations, but perhaps none is more annoying than consistently getting stuck at the same point in the interview process. Whether you’re having trouble getting the hiring manager’s attention in the first place, or difficulty closing the deal and getting the offer, it’s tough to fall short of your goal. It can be even more challenging when you don’t get selected for a second interview, even though you thought you did well the first time around. The good news is that when your job search derails at the same point each time, there’s a good chance that there’s something you can do to get a better result. If you’re willing to do a little self-reflection, you might be able to figure out what you’re doing wrong and try something else instead. Reasons You Aren’t Getting a Second Interview (That Aren’t Related to You) But before considering your possible missteps, it’s important to note that there are plenty of reasons why you might not get a second interview that have nothing to do with you. If you’re just starting a job search process, and you’ve had one or two first interviews that didn’t lead to follow-ups, don’t assume that the problem is you. The Employer’s Needs Might Have Changed Companies make changes all the time. They cut their budgets. They reallocate dollars to different roles. They move positions to other teams and teams to other locations. Sometimes, these changes happen in the middle of your interview process. Typically, in this case, the hiring manager or HR representative will apologetically inform you that their needs have changed. While that might sound like, “It’s not you, it’s me,” sometimes it’s the truth. You can’t land a job that doesn’t exist anymore. Maybe You Weren’t a Good Cultural Fit Culture fit matters almost as much as skill set when it comes to hiring. The most talented worker in the world won’t be as productive in an environment that doesn’t work for them. A recruiter once described this as, “trying to write with your non-dominant hand.” If you’re a people person and love working with teams, up-close and in-person, then working remotely won’t be a good experience for you. If you’re an introvert who prefers working alone, a gigantic open office full of perks and parties will feel like setting up shop in the middle of Grand Central Station. There’s nothing wrong with you if the hiring manager divines that you’re not going to be happy working there. They might have done you a huge favor by letting you move on to a place where you’ll be more comfortable and successful. The Hiring Manager Might Secretly Have Someone Else in Mind This is the cruelest of all, but it does happen: sometimes, the hiring manager has been given a mandate to interview outside candidates, but they prefer an internal candidate … and know just which one they want. In that case, you could be the most qualified applicant in the world, yet you’re not going to get the job. Reasons Why You’re Not Getting a Second Interview (That You Can Control) You blew the first interview. You called the hiring manager by the wrong name. You didn’t know much about the company, and it showed. You couldn’t explain why you wanted the job, or provide answers to other standard interview questions. You were late or otherwise rude. There are plenty of ways to blow an interview, and while you can make up for some of them in your follow-up, sometimes you just can’t recover. When that happens, learn from your mistakes and do better next time. And don’t beat yourself up â€" bad interviews happen to everyone. You didn’t tell the right story. Before you set foot in corporate headquarters, you should prepare your elevator pitch and a few short, engaging stories about how your skills and qualifications match their requirements. (Reviewing the ad and job description can be a big help.) That doesn’t mean that you should go into the interview waiting for a chance to deliver your monologue. It just means that you should be ready to share your accomplishments in a way that will resonate with the hiring team. Humans love stories. If you can tell a good one, you’ll have an advantage over the competition. It’s important to make sure that when you’re crafting your stories, you focus on the right thing. For example, your leadership skills may be impressive, but they could work against you if the company isn’t looking for managers, or people theyre afraid would leave for a management job. Pay attention to their specifications in the job listing, and highlight your relevant experience. You didn’t send a thank-you note. Thank-you notes have been part of the job-search process probably since the invention of writing, but don’t make the mistake of thinking they’re a thing of the past. In a 2017 survey from TopResume, 68% of hiring managers and recruiters said receiving a thank-you note influenced their decision about whether to hire a candidate. Send a thank-you noteâ€"handwritten or via emailâ€"within 24 hours of your interview. Make sure to emphasize your skills and fit for the job, and to express your gratitude for the interview. Proofread your note and double-check spellings of personal names and company names. You didn’t follow directions. At all points during the interview process, it’s important to follow directions. Send the requested materials, (e.g., resume, cover letter, portfolio, etc.) and use the specified file formats. Once you’ve interviewed, be sure to follow the hiring manager’s lead when following up. For example, if they say they’re interviewing candidates over the next two weeks, send your thank-you note immediately but wait to conduct further follow up until after their process is likely completed. You were too persistent. Following up after a job interview is tricky. You need to express your thanks and interest in the job, but you don’t want to look like you’re stalking the hiring manager. If you’ve sent a thank-you note and a follow-up email, and you haven’t heard back, it may be best to let it go. No one wants to work with someone who never lets anything go. Your social media is too revealing. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 57% of employers have decided not to hire a candidate based on something they found online. If your social media contains material that employers might find objectionable â€" think anything from bikini photos to party pictures to political opinions â€" you might be hurting yourself in the job search. Best practice is to lock down your profiles so that only work-appropriate material is visible to hiring managers. But don’t delete your accounts. Forty-seven percent of employers in that survey also said that they’d be unlikely to hire a candidate they couldn’t find online. One of your references isn’t on your side. Do you know what your references are saying about you? If not, it’s time to find out. First, make sure you’re asking for references from people who are familiar with your work and who will definitely have favorable things to say about you. Always ask potential references if they’re willing and able to attest to your good qualities before you pass along their information, and review the job details with them so that they’ll know what the hiring manager wants to hear. If you’re still not sure what kind of picture your references are painting for potential employers, you can always try asking hiring managers why they’re passing on your candidacy. Keep it vague and respectful â€" don’t demand a detailed explanation and don’t put words in their mouths. But do feel free to ask if they had any particular reason for passing. Frame it as a request for feedback (i.e.,“I’m always trying to improve. If possible, I’d love to hear any feedback about my candidacy or the interview process”). Then, thank them for their time regardless, and move on.

4 Bright Pathways out of Your Dead-End Job

4 Bright Pathways out of Your Dead-End Job 4 Bright Pathways out of Your Dead-End Job Thanks to a complex psychological process termed effort aversion, people tend to choose lower effort, lower enjoyment jobs over higher effort, higher enjoyment jobs  when pay at each job is equal. If  effort aversion affects the  typical workers career decisions, chances are that any given worker could be making a series of effort aversion-based, short-term career decisions that  lead them away from a more fulfilling/challenging career toward a dead-end career. Are you a worker whose effort aversion has lead to a dead-end job? Are you looking to revive your career? Then youre in luck here are four ways to do just that: 1. Be Prepared to Accept Some Short-Term Pain for Long-Term Gain   Be open to opportunities to take on additional duties without immediate financial reward. Be ready to take on some short-term pain in exchange for the opportunity to grow, be challenged, and experience greater job satisfaction. Playing the long game is likely to open many new doors and lead you out of your dead-end career path. Of course, you should avoid being exploited by  setting limits to your short-term sacrifices, but you should also try and  seize every opportunity that presents itself to you. 2. Reskill Into a Growing Career Path This study from the Oxford Martin School suggests that 47 percent of jobs are at risk for total extinction or at least drastically reduced numbers  over the next 10 years. Postal work  jobs, which are expected to experience a 30 percent reduction in number  over the next 10 years, are an extreme example of this phenomenon. Cashiers and data entry clerks are at extreme risk, too. If you are working in a dead-end industry, know that opportunities for progress are  dwindling and take the time now to reskill or transfer your skills to a new field that is in demand. 3. Find a Halfway House Fear of change can be a big barrier to getting out of a dead-end career path, especially if the dead-end job has dented your confidence but you really dont need to do a Jerry Maguire-style exit and take a leap of faith across the void. Just find a halfway house instead. For example, if you want to become a chef, you can take a night course in cooking or get a second job at a local restaurant. These may be small steps, but that means you are much more likely to take them. Thats a good thing: small or not,  theyre also committed steps out of your career dead end, 4. The Leap of Faith This tip  comes with a health warning: if you really cant face your dead-end job anymore, you could just give your notice and walk out the door. Blind panic and survival instinct can be some of the most powerful career motivators of all I know this from experience but its best to have a plan and enough capital to live before taking the leap. Once you have these things, you can throw yourself wholeheartedly into your new career ventures in the unknown. Just be sure to talk this one over with trusted colleagues and family before taking this route. If any of you have successfully navigated your way out of career dead ends, Id love to hear how you did it!

How to Become a 4A2X1 Biomedical Equipment Specialist How to Become a 4A2X1 Biomedical Equipment Specialist There are many Air Force Enlisted Jobs, one of which is a Biomedical Equipment specialists are tasked with helping to keep the Air Forces healthcare technology top-rate. Below is a detailed job description, duties, and responsibilities. If you like what you see, and arent interested in having one of many Aircrew careers that exist, youll want to take careful note of the qualifications. 4a2x1 Job Description A Biomedical Equipment specialist installs, inspects, repairs,  and modifies biomedical equipment and support systems. They then perform pre-purchase evaluations of medical devices. You may even be asked to advise on operational theory, underlying physiological principles,  and safe clinical applications of biomedical equipment. You wont just work with other members of the military. People in this job implement organizational maintenance support for all medical devices used within the medical treatment facility (MTF), medical research laboratories, air transportable hospitals, clinics, and contingency hospitals. In this role, people look to you for guidance in high-pressure situations. They provide support to technical teams and intermediate maintenance teams to support them on the medical equipment systems they use when they are assigned to a regional Medical Equipment Repair Center (MERC). This type of position fosters people who are looking for a career in which they can grow. Eventually, you will direct an entire facility management program when assigned. 4a2x1 Job Duties and Responsibilities A lot of what youll be doing requires assembly and installation  to inspect new biomedical equipment. That means youll be assembling equipment and conducting pre-operational tests to verify everything is in compliance with medical and technical standards, specifications, contracts, and regulatory guidance. There are different duties are responsibilities for junior and senior-level specialists. Junior Biomedical Equipment Specialist Duties If you havent already gotten the gist, installation is a big part of this. You will need to install, or at least coordinate the installation of, medical equipment that requires interface with other devices or with the facility. Furthermore, if there are any maintenance support problems, you will need to resolve those. When youre not assembling, installing, or fixing equipment, youll stay busy testing complex medical equipment and installations. For example, you might be testing diagnostic radiology systems and physiological monitoring systems. The testing process involves conducting pre-procurement surveys and providing technical advice on the purchase of new biomedical equipment systems to make sure they fit the required facility interface requirements. As stated before, there are many opportunities for advancement, so at some point, you will be supervising preventive maintenance tasks after you master them. The kinds of tasks you would supervise would be: lubricationmechanical adjustmentreplacement of filterstubingequipment subject to deterioration A large part of the job involves abiding by each manufacturers technical literature, pertinent federal regulations, national standards, state and local laws, and Air Force guidance. Part of that means being proactive to make sure you know all of the electrical, electronic, optical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic,  and physiological principles of the equipment so that you can diagnose and locate system malfunctions before they become too large of an issue. This is no small undertaking. You will even be authorized to make modifications to biomedical equipment where you see fit, and that is a big responsibility. On the other hand, one of the more obvious job responsibilities is to identify deficient equipment. Once you do so, it is your responsibility to initiate corrective action and inform personnel of possible safety hazards. Part of that means having to complete quality control reports to ensure the accuracy of bench stock balance records and historical maintenance records (HMRs). Some tasks are kind of administrative. It will be your job to keep the medical equipment warranty and guarantee program up to date. You will also have to develop statements of work (SOWs) and manage the medical equipment contract maintenance program. Senior Biomedical Equipment Specialist Duties When you advance to becoming a senior specialist, you may be assigned as a facility manager to manage resource protection, security, energy conservation, fire protection, communications, housekeeping, and facility maintenance programs, as well as maintaining liaison with base agencies such as civil engineering (CE), communications,  and contracting to acquire services for operation and maintenance of the facility, the installed equipment, and utility systems. At this rate, you have probably learned most of the processes, so you will be part of projects to acquire new equipment from the beginning. This means you will coordinate project construction, maintenance, and alteration for the facilities you work with. Of course, you will also be managing staff. But it wont just be a staff of other specialists. You will be responsible for the maintenance of the hospital environment and of housekeeping. You wont only investigate the equipment. 5 Small Career Moves That Can Lead to Massive Results

5 Small Career Moves That Can Lead to Massive Results 5 Small Career Moves That Can Lead to Massive Results If you’re like most people, you probably have a few big career goals. But, if you’re like the vast majority of us, you probably feel like the steps to get there are intimidating, scary, and even impossible. The distance between where you are and where you want to one day be can feel insurmountable. Or, maybe you don’t have a clear vision of where you want to end up. You know you don’t want to remain stagnant, but you’re not sure what that end game looks like. Either way, the good news is there are plenty of totally manageable things that you can do for your career today that will pay off in dividends down the line. After all, no matter where you’re headed or how far away that feels, reaching a big goal is a series of much smaller steps. Try one- or all five- to lay the foundation for your someday success. 1. Grab Coffee Grabbing coffee probably seems like no big deal. You might already do it once (er, several times) a day, using it to transform from crusty bed monster to semi-functioning human or catching up with co-workers in need of a mid-afternoon break. But sitting down for a latte with a friend, former colleague, or someone new to your network is also a fast, simple career-boosting strategy- and can quickly catapult any situation from stagnant to stimulated. My own example: A couple years ago, I felt trapped in my assistant job and was hoping for a more creative role. I reached out to a family friend who had a cool job in marketing and friends in industries that interested me, sending a Facebook message explaining my situation and asking if she knew anyone who was looking for someone like me. She put me in touch with her friend who owned a content publishing startup, and we sat down for coffee. A few weeks later? I was hired as her content manager. OK, this is certainly a best-case scenario, but even if you don’t have a clear purpose in mind, these meetings can be incredibly valuable. Having one-one-one interactions opens the floor for interesting and productive conversation, sincere advice, and deeper connections. You’re also creating a memory with someone, which makes your relationship more significant and is something you can use to your advantage when looking for a new job or want advice down the road. What it really comes down to is consistent, intentional network maintenance- getting into the habit of meeting up with people in your network is a small, but crucial move that can ultimately lead to big changes for your career. 2. Get a Certification Higher education is a common step for moving your career forward, but heading to grad school can be a big leap, both emotionally and financially. Instead, consider getting certified for specific skills or specialties in your field, which allows you to add to your expertise (or add legitimacy to the background you already have) while still working, and ultimately gives you a chance to set yourself apart from other candidates or increase your value as an employee. For instance, financial analyst Travis Lockhart, FPA was searching for ways to differentiate himself from his peers and gain more industry knowledge, so he earned the Certified Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis (FPA) credential from the Association for Financial Professionals, a self-paced, cost-effective program. Lockhart shares just a few of the benefits he saw: “I was promoted to Manager of FPA, along with a salary increase, at about the same time as gaining the FPA credential. I definitely think the FPA certification makes you more marketable as an FPA professional, helps to increase and validate your skills and competency, and brings you into a broad network of likeminded professionals.” If, like Lockhart, you’re looking to grow and verify your current skill set, explore certification programs in your industry: Options range from finance to HR, marketing to project management, and plenty of fields in between. If you think you might need some totally new skills to get where you want to go, look into online classes that offer certifications, and then learn how to share these credentials on your resume. And if you aren’t sure what skills you need to grow, talk to people one or two rungs up the chain from you to figure out where your gaps are- or just follow your gut and learn something that’s interesting to you! Even if it’s a skill you don’t end up using later in life, pushing yourself to learn will help you continue to grow in the long run. 3. Take on a New Project Whether it’s taking the lead on an assignment that’s fallen through the cracks at work or starting a side project or volunteering gig, taking on something extra outside of your current responsibilities can help you stretch yourself while setting yourself up for all kinds of potential benefits, both now and down the line. For example, volunteering to champion a task or team at work will allow you to practice owning and executing a project- something that positions you as a leader even if you aren't in a management role. You’ll be remembered as someone who embraces new challenges and opportunities, is ambitious, and gets the job done- not to mention you can reference your hard work later when negotiating a promotion or pay raise. And starting a side project? That allows you to explore abilities and interests that don’t quite fit into your current job. These small ventures are also excellent portfolio builders, serve as differentiators in the job search, and can be the push you need to score a more fulfilling role in your company or a completely new job. Of course, there’s an important caveat here: You should only pick up extra work if you truly feel like you have time to do it right- otherwise it could end up hurting your reputation! If taking on a new project sounds like too much given your current workload, consider just helping a colleague with a small task. You’ll still be seen as someone who takes initiative, you may pick up a new skill, and you’ll definitely be improving relationships at work. 4. Ask for a Small Raise Of course, we’re not suggesting you walk into your boss’ office and demand your wages be doubled. But if you haven’t had a conversation about a pay bump in a while, now might be a good time. Remember: Even just a few thousand can really add up. In fact, researchers have found that people early in their careers who negotiate their starting salary by just $5,000 (upping it from $50K to $55K) can earn over $600,000 more over the course of a 40-year career, assuming a 5% annual increase in salary. That’s a lot of moolah that just a little ask right now can lead you to. Having salary conversations can also be major motivators and help to up your confidence- when you feel you’re making what you deserve, you’ll likely feel empowered to do even better work. Also, the more you practice discussing your wages, the more comfortable you’ll feel bringing it (and other topics you need to negotiate) up with your supervisors. And even if your raise is smaller than you wanted- or you don’t get a raise at all- you’re still vocalizing your career goals and reminding your boss that your work is valuable. Situating yourself as a confident, assertive employee sets the stage for future advancement. Knowing how and when to ask for a raise is important, so remember, when you ask, be sure you have a game plan. 5. Do Something That Scares You a Little Not everyone’s a risk-taker, especially when it comes to work, but moving forward in your career often involves taking risks, both big and small. That’s what all of this advice ultimately comes down to- making sure that you’re regularly doing things that make your heart beat just a little bit faster. Maybe for you that’s asking for more, asking a stranger for coffee, or getting a certification to verify how awesome you are. Or maybe it’s something totally different for you: speaking up in a meeting, asking for help on a stretch project you’re stuck on, offering to give a presentation at an industry conference. Acknowledging where you’d like to grow professionally- and taking steps to get there- takes bravery, and it’s likely something that you’ll work on over the course of your career. But small, incremental improvements starting now will help you grow into the professional you want to be. Photo of man working courtesy of Tom Merton/Getty.

Tips for Starting a Nonprofit Animal Organization

Tips for Starting a Nonprofit Animal Organization Tips for Starting a Nonprofit Animal Organization Nonprofit animal organizations have become increasingly popular in recent years, providing a wide array of services and advocacy programs that ensure animal welfare. Here are some tips on how to go about starting a nonprofit animal organization. Be Strategic Define a Mission. When founding a nonprofit, it is critical that you determine and define your organization’s goals at the outset. Do you want to open an animal rescue facility, a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, a trap and release group, a pet food bank, or a therapeutic riding program? Will your organization act as an advocacy group or provide direct care for animals? Choose a Unique and Descriptive Name. Your organization’s name should be distinctive and correlate directly to the type of services you provide. Avoid names that are already in use if possible (a quick search of the internet can alert you to such cases). Definitely be sure not to choose a name used by a large national group or any group that operates in your area. Recruit a Board of Directors. A nonprofit organization can benefit from having a board of individuals with backgrounds in areas such as business management, veterinary medicine, law, administration, accounting, marketing, and grant writing. A small board of 3 to 7 committed members is generally recommended. Financial and Legal Aspects Create a Budget. The IRS will require a budget for your organization’s filing documents, and donors may ask to view your budget plan before offering funding. Open a Corporate Bank Account. You will need to handle (hopefully) a significant amount of funding from donors. The corporate bank account should be set up right away to accommodate necessary deposits and withdrawals. Formally Apply for Nonprofit Status. Nonprofit status is also known as 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status. Once your organization qualifies, donors will be permitted to write off their contributions of money, supplies, and other material gifts. This tax-exempt status can be a key qualifier for a number of grant programs and private donations. It can also qualify your organization for tax-exempt postal rates for mailings and exemptions from property, sales, or income taxes. After filling out the proper paperwork (Form 1023) with the Internal Revenue Service, an organization will be considered for 501(c)(3) status. It can take three to six months (or longer) to obtain approval, so it is important to handle the paperwork without delay. The determination letter that approves an organization’s tax-exempt status should be kept in a safe place where it can be accessed at the request of donors. Groups expecting to bring in $5,000 or less in revenue from donations or other activities might not be required to request official tax-exempt status from the IRS, provided they operate in a manner compliant with the 501(c)(3) guidelines. An attorney should always be consulted to be sure that all documentation is in order to ensure state and government approval. Promotion and Expansion Seek Publicity. When your organization is ready to go public, be sure to distribute a press release to the media that announces an open house event or initial volunteer meeting. Local television stations, radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and animal-related businesses may be willing to spread the word if approached by a representative from your group. Mailing lists can also be rented or borrowed from other animal organizations for use in targeted direct mailings. The internet and social media sites can play a large role in promoting your nonprofit organization. Be sure to immediately create a presence on Facebook and Twitter so supporters can stay up to date with the latest information on upcoming events. You should also consider creating a website and email newsletter to show donors all the good work that you do with their funds. If you are rescuing animals directly, be sure to utilize major placement sites such as Petfinder.com to advertise adoptable pets. Seek Donations and Volunteers. Donations can come in various forms: money, materials, services, and volunteer service hours. A volunteer force is very important in keeping animal nonprofit groups running, so try to recruit as many members of the community as possible. They can assist with day to day animal care, publicity, fundraising events, and recruitment of new volunteers. Corporate sponsors are possible sources of funding, as many large businesses seek tax deductions through their donations to charitable groups. Local businesses may also be willing to contribute to a community animal organization, whether through financial support or donation of goods and services. Photographers may donate photos for your website or brochures, pet food manufacturers may donate their products, veterinarians may offer free or discounted services. Sponsors may also donate their goods and services to charity auctions and other fundraising events.
