Hiring Is Only the First Step What You Should Know About New Employee Orientation - Workology
Hiring Is Only the First Step What You Should Know About New Employee Orientation How to Conduct an Orientation From day one, the employee orientation is an integral part of employeesâ success. Orientations have a lot of value to both the new employee and the company. For the employee, you are introducing them to their new co-workers, giving a tour of the facility, and setting the expectations for their new role. During this process, you are giving them their first impression as to what the company culture is like. Chris Joseph states in Why Is Orientation Important to the Employees: âAn effective orientation serves to acclimate the employee and speed up the time it takes for [him or her] to become a productive member of the organization.â The value to the company is setting the employee up for success right off the bat. If an employee knows their expectations and is comfortable in a timely manner, you are likely to reduce turnover and increase productivity, ensuring a smooth transition into the employeeâs new role. This saves time and money (and companies like that)! How to Conduct an Orientation There are many ways to conduct an orientation, but not all are created equal. There are checklists that assist employers in staying consistent and making sure to provide everything needed, for example, where to park, what the hours of operation are, and whether the company has a cafeteria? Other information needed is a phone list of employees, and the new employees email address and login information. Some employers show a PowerPoint presentation introducing the history of the company, a few of the executives, and an overview of the benefits offered. Others will simply introduce the new hire to their trainer and let them be, after filling out all the paperwork of course. There is no right or wrong way to conduct it. Here are a few suggestions for producing an effective orientation: Make sure employees know what is expected of them and set some goals. Give an overview of the benefits of the company, not just health and retirement benefits. Be creative, keeping them engaged. Introduce them to a mentor and/or trainer, or a person that will assist them for the first few months. Lunch with various people from the C-suite. This can be multiple lunches or a round-table type lunch. Set a time to check in on them in a couple weeks, months, to review and see how they are doing. Orientation is a process, not a one-and-done event. Checking in with employees along the way at, letâs say in 30, 60, and 90 days, to not only provide feedback to the employee, but receive feedback, gives everyone a chance to be successful. What About Small Businesses? Employee orientation is not just for large corporations. Businesses of all sizes need to have some version of introducing new hires into the company. This establishes a relationship between both parties. A small business may have a condensed version of orientation compared to a large corporation, but should still include the suggestions listed above. A large corporation may present to multiple new hires in a conference room then break off, whereas a small business will work with one individual. By creating a process that is followed with every new employee, you are ensuring a culture of productivity!

4 Worst Resume Blunders and Their Antidotes - milewalk
4 Worst Resume Blunders and Their Antidotes - milewalk 4 Worst Resume Blunders and Their Antidotes Itâs time for another resume article. Yay! Iâve written a number of them. Each has its own story and offers unique insight. None, however, has focused exclusively on the worst resume killers, so I thought it might be time to discuss the four worst resume blunders and their antidotes. Before we address the blunders, letâs discuss why they occur in the first placeâ"because people ignore the four most important aspects of the resume. Those are 1) Layout, 2) Content, 3) Evidence, and 4) Benefit. Layoutâ"is it pleasing to interviewerâs eye and (positively) memorable as a result of its beauty? Contentâ"is the information truly relevant and important for the interviewer to know? Evidenceâ"have you substantiated your awesomeness or have you hollowly stated, âIâm awesome?â Benefitâ"have you assured the interviewer he or she will live a better life once youâre hired? Now that you understand the four areas to keep in mind as you prepare your resume, letâs take a peek at the four most common killers and how to fix them. Funky Chronology. The interviewers read from top to bottom and left to right. They might glance at your resume looking for keywords, but this is the sequence in which they glance. They also think in terms of âtime,â as in what did you do yesterday, last year, and last decade. Spoon-feed them this way. Breaking their pattern and making them work harder is a killer. Itâs a major blunder to layout your resume based on function. That is, [I was a] Project Manager at Company ABC from 2012-2015 and Company XYZ from 2009-2010. [I was a] business analyst from 2011-2012 at Company DEF. You get the picture. It looks like an unfinished Rubikâs Cube and it gives the interviewer a headache. The Antidote: List your work experience in reverse chronological order with the company name first, role second, and so forth. See How to Write a Resume That Gets You the Job Interview, The Ultimate Resume Template for Any 22-Year-Old, and A Resume Quickie for nice layouts. You can amend appropriately based on how tenured you are to the workforce as well as your industry (commercial, academic) and so forth. Activity-Based as Opposed to Achievements-Based. You know you have a (yawn) activity-based resume when itâs solely loaded with expressions such as âResponsible forâ¦â and âParticipated inâ¦â These statements generally identify what did you. It doesnât matter what activity you performed nearly as much as what the outcome, achievement, and benefit your company realized as a result of you performing the activity. The Antidote: You certainly can keep your activities within the resume provided they are followed by the result. I sold widgets, which resulted in $200K in additional profit. I optimized the process, which resulted in $100K in cost savings. I coached and managed the team to improve its production by 240% from the previous leader/year/etc. Even if youâre unable to identify the tangible, numerical benefits, youâre better off highlighting the qualitative benefit than including no benefit. Is That Your Opinion or Fact? There are several ways to title this blunder. I could have called it âWords I Think Ruin the Resume.â I realize your resume is your personal marketing document, but can you pretty please make an effort to substantiate your claims? No one cares whether you think you are: âdetail-orientedâ or âa good problem solverâ or âa leaderâ or âhardworkingâ or âa team playerâ or âproactive!â Those words are technically your opinion of yourself. The interviewer wants to decide all by him or herself. The Antidote: First, purge your resume of any traces of self-proclaimed qualities. Substitute actual evidence. Instead of claiming you are âproactive,â replace it with a story that shows you took the initiative and achieved insanely high results. For example, â[I] initiated after-hours workgroup to evaluate new products; Group effort resulted in two new products, which grossed $100K in unplanned revenue for 2015.â You get the picture. I Donât Care What You Want. This is About What I Want. Whoever told you to put an Objective Statement at the top of your resume should be flogged. You can argue all you want, but a resume serves as your marketing document to tell employers what you offer and how they will benefit from hiring you. If you want to explain to them what you want, write it in an email, put it in a cover letter, or tell them in person. Donât waste precious real estate on your resume when you can add more insight as to why theyâd benefit. Whatâs more is that you wasted the real estate that was likely the first thing they looked at. Ouch. The Antidote: Iâm a huge fan of providing the big picture and then getting smaller. Give them a snapshot of your entire life and get them excited about what theyâre about to read. Make them salivate before they get to the middle of the (first) page. Start with a career profile or career summary. Then hit them with your career highlightsâ"those truly major accomplishments you are so proud of. Make those the first pieces they see. That captures their attention and entices them to read more. Objective Statements make people yawn. See How to Write a Resume That Gets You the Job Interview for samples. Lastly, there are many resume blunders, but these four are the worst offenders. Turning them in your favor will yield much better results. Iâd love to hear from you: In your opinion, what are some of the worst resume killers? How to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired - The Muse
The most effective method to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired - The Muse Step by step instructions to Respond When You Get Laid Off or Fired One of the most stunning discussions you will ever have in your activity is the point at which your manager discloses to you that you're finished working for the organization. Possibly it's a cutback that totally catches unaware you. Possibly it's an exhibition related issue that you knew about. Regardless of the reason, the genuine occasion can be an all out stunner. While getting terminated and getting laid off may include various things, it's critical to deal with the circumstance expertly in any case. What's more, one approach to do that is to get ready for it before it occurs. So in case you're worried at all about losing your employment sooner rather than later, this is definitely justified even despite a read. Since as trying as it might be to remain engaged and present in the discussion, that is your objective. It may be hard to consider it such, yet this is a significant business conversation. Think arranging your severance or end bundle. Here are seven hints on the most proficient method to deal with yourself and what to state when you're speechless. 1. Remain Present and Manage Your Emotions I once heard an associate tirade that she needed to get laid off in the following round of workforce decreases. She was vocal about how she would invite the opportunity to escape from her group, her chief, her activity. In the following round, it just so happens, she got laid off. Be that as it may, she didn't go around and high five everybody announcing her bliss. She went ballistic. She hollered. She told everybody how out of line the framework was. She boisterously announced she was not going to help change her work to another person. There was an implied understanding among the chiefs that, That's right, we settled on a decent choice on that one. You would prefer not to be that individual. Regardless of whether you despise your activity and are pining for a cutback notice, an occupation misfortune can thump the breeze directly out of you. The decision to leave is not, at this point yours; somebody has settled on the choice for you, and that can be difficult to accept. Rather than fuming like my previous associate, take a long, slow breathe out and request a moment to process the news. At the point when you deal with your feelings by delaying this way, you assist yourself with remaining quiet, and you allow yourself to be available for the remainder of the inescapable discussion. What's more, by not permitting yourself to respond promptly, you safeguard your well deserved notoriety. 2. Keep Your Dignity A previous worker was on a last-chance execution understanding. Fundamentally, in the event that he spoiled once again, he'd be terminated, and he knew it. Indeed, it wasn't some time before he messed up. At the point when I conveyed the updates on his end, I could see the layers of stun, lament, and regret all over. He might've cried. He vowed to change his conduct. He beseeched me to change the choice. (I didn't.) It was wince commendable, and I was humiliated for him. At the point when supervisors are planning for cutbacks and end, the procedure is well on its way when you get the message. The association's new head check has been determined, the division bundle arranged, and workspace outlines changed. Asking for your activity will never alter the supervisor's perspective. So keep your nobility flawless and center around the remainder of your discussion. 3. Get Your Stories Straight Ask how the organization intends to speak to your detachment from the organization. At the point when you look for your next gig, your boss and you need to be singing a similar karaoke verses, if you catch my drift. You can help illuminate this. A straightforward solicitation will do it: I need to be certain that when you reference how I left the organization, it doesn't hurt my odds for my next activity. Would we be able to speak somewhat about what you will say when others ask? Ask for this recorded as a hard copy, so you have an official archive that says you were laid off and not terminated. In the event that you've been terminated, your manager may make a deal to avoid referencing the end and rather essentially check the dates you were utilized by the association. 4. Ask About Getting Assistance Finding a New Role Numerous organizations recruit specialists to assist workers with finding new gigs. Solicit what kind from help, assuming any, the association intends to give. Decide to what extent that help will last, and what sort of vocation instructing you're qualified for. Also, once more, get it recorded as a hard copy on the off chance that you can. 5. Approach in case You're Allowed to Apply for Other Positions Internally Organization strategy may direct this. A few spots will let you do so immediately. Others may force a holding up period before rehiring or permitting you to independent for the organization later on. In the event that you were terminated for execution related issues, you most likely would prefer not to ask, and your boss presumably trusts you won't. Be that as it may, in case you're being given up due to group rebuilding, it merits asking what different open doors might be accessible to you. 6. Deal with You Get the subtleties on severance, medical coverage, when you can expect your last check will show up, how you will be made up for unused get-away time, unused wiped out or individual time, when you'll be repaid for movement costs, and how you're required to get the entirety of your things home. A few workplaces will offer to transport things to you so you don't need to manage the extraordinarily ungainly and awkward getting together your region while your representatives work next to you. In the event that you have investment opportunities, rewards, deals commissions, educational cost repayments, or different additional items joined to your position, get some information about those too. In a cutback, inquire as to whether you will be required to help progress the work, what the desires are, and to what extent that period will last. Also, in case you're getting ended, get clear on whether you're relied upon to leave the structure ASAP or on the off chance that you can take a couple of hours to tidy up your PC and head out by the day's end. When you have an idea about these subtleties, you can step away for a day or two, and test the territories where you'd prefer to arrange. Maybe you need more severance, a more drawn out period experiencing significant change directing, or a maintenance reward for doing an excessively incredible activity progressing your work. Be set up to legitimize any solicitations and framework a particular proposition for what you'd prefer to see. 7. Try not to Sign Anything You're going to concoct more inquiries after some time. Tell your administrator you'll audit all the data that is given. Tell her you'll return with any inquiries or explanation you need. Until all the subtleties are worked through, don't sign anything. Most bosses need you to sign a general discharge that says you'll bring no lawful activity against them. Your last payouts are dependent upon you marking the records. In the event that there was ever a decent time to have a lawyer perused a record before you sign it, this is it! Unforeseen minutes like cutbacks or terminations can feel like a staggering individual assault. What's more, there's no uncertainty, they can be hard to process. At the point when you're ready to step back, and request what you need, be that as it may, you'll locate a little feeling of strengthening that may shock you. Regardless of how hard the news is, remain cool, be a master, and begin pondering your best course of action. What's more, make sure to take two or three days before you hurriedly (and drastically) post a significant update on your web-based social networking channels. 5 Lessons from Interning How to Stand Out While Blending In
5 Lessons from Interning How to Stand Out While Blending In Temporary position is everything and nothing. You're required to be all over the place and no place. On the off chance that you contrast the workplace with a family unit, at that point you ought to be viewed as a component of the furnishings. There's risk in turning out to be also at home, however. On the off chance that it sounds confounding, at that point you should figure that turning into an understudy is difficult. More undergrads are doing entry level position since they have to prepare. You may think about whether there are employments for life out there. Truly, there are customary employments. Not every person will experience that profession way, however. And afterward there are some prospective school graduates that are progressively excited about picking up understanding. They may (or may not) be anxious to get off the market. There's nothing incorrectly about it, yet you may (or may not) know that everything falls into their legitimate spot. In the end. Preparing would facilitate the weight that can slow down you when you arrive at your 25th year (or 30th). Temporary job is tied in with hanging out in the (corporate) group and mixing in simultaneously. Take the path of least resistance, in the event that you may inquire. It's something along that line (pretty much). There's something else entirely to it also. What Former Interns Might Advise You Applying for internship is like taking a risk. It ought to be normal for high school understudies (like you) to be flighty disapproved about choices that they should choose during their short residency in the college, and one of those choices is to be an assistant or not. This is anything but a money related issue, yet rather a vocation pivotal occasion. You may end up being fortunate when discovering your actual calling at an exceptionally youthful age. In the event that you don't extravagant your position by any means, at that point you can charge it to encounter. (It won't dazzle bosses immediately, as it relies upon how you recast it.) If you extravagant gathering new individuals, at that point entry level position won't frustrate you by any means. You may meet somebody who can be an important contact in your system. (This expert can work together with you at some point or another. It very well may be a venturing stone to what you need from the beginning.) You should be accessibl e whenever these open doors present itself, yet it doesn't imply that you should acquiesce to everything. Plan ahead. Do your homework. Remember that you're not leaving on this excursion since you need to pick up understanding from it. There's no reason in not having time on doing exhaustive research on the organizations (or establishments) that you wish to be an understudy. You should know the desires, which can test your capacities later. It's silly to meet the necessary number of working hours without taking in anything from it. Furthermore, you should not be reluctant to state it. You should have the option to verbalize it, and how to place it in a courteous manner. Try not to consider cash. However. Internship can be an all-expending affair. Don't be astounded in the event that you get a call (or instant message) from your supervisor on an end of the week. Try not to take it against your coworkers in the event that they don't react to your Skype calls (in the wake of getting guidelines from your chief). What's more, don't get excessively genuine and edgy about the circumstance. Maintain your center, yet don't lose your comical inclination. It can come convenient when you mishandle at some point. Mix-ups won't occur on the off chance that you study your errands. Inquire as to whether you have to explain something. Furthermore, attempt to demonstrate your appreciation to your chief (or potentially partners). The encounters that you would pick up from it should assist you with improving as an individual later. Become accustomed to the work environment drama. Consider yourself fortunate in the event that you won't experience two representatives who loathe one another. It should make an ungainly second, however you will discover that the individuals who have been around had figured out how to become accustomed to it. You have to accept the way things are, uncovering your rational mien when it's required most. You ought to be discerning about the signs, which implies that you don't should be caught up in what you're doing. Workplace issues can turn undesirable if nobody would keep a beware of it. 5 Weird Things Nerves Make People Do in Job Interviews
5 Weird Things Nerves Make People Do in Job Interviews Many people come to me for help when they freeze up in interview, which they attribute to panic and nerves. Thatâs true. Your nerves can make you freeze up under the spotlight of an interview. What you may not know however, is that your nerves will make you do other strange things. So if youâve ever had an interview that you thought went wonderfully well, only to receive a knock back a week or so later, read on. Many recruiters see the way you handle yourself in interview, as an indication of what you will be like under pressure in real life. That is, you give at your weakest points. Here are a few examples to show you what I mean: 1. Answering the question before an interviewer finishes asking it I list this first as I honestly loathe this behaviour. Iâm not sure why people do this, but my take on this is that the person has poor listening skills. Interrupting someone before they finish asking you a question is like a verbal kneecapping â" unexpected and painful. RELATED: The Only 5 Interview Questions You Need to Prepare for 2. Not answering the question Sometimes interview questions are too long. Sometimes an interview question has too much preamble. Sometimes interview questions are too confusing. So as an interviewer I donât mind repeating a question, but when I need to rephrase and simplify a question three or so times, I give up and move on to the next question. 3. Talking too much Some people donât seem to take a breath in interview. This is fine if you have an engaging story and you can remember the question you are answering a few minutes into your answer. However many people keep talking and forget to keep checking to see if their interviewer is listening. The tricky thing here is to know whether your interviewer is a person who likes detail or who likes bullet points. Itâs also difficult to know if interviewers are actually listening. Some interviewers, particularly experienced interviewers, are professional at looking like theyâre listening. See more on this at How to Zip It in Interviews. 4. Shutting down Often people switch into âinterview mode.â Theyâre engaging in reception. Theyâre lovely over the phone. But when they get into interview they talk in a completely different way. As an interviewer I think âwhatever happened to?â 5. Injecting odd phrases âLike,â âlike you know,â âdo you get what I mean?â This verbal stuffing can completely detract from your appearance as a competent professional. The public speaking group, Toastmasters, is good for eliminating this kind of thing, as is recording yourself in an interview practice session. Bonus: Forgetting to listen Sometimes people launch into an answer that they want to give, rather than listening to what a question is actually asking. The danger in this is that it may take the interviewer a couple of minutes to realise you are off tangent. If your interviewer is short on time, or simply impatient, you may have missed your chance. Resume Writing - Do You Need to Capitalize on Your Degree?
Resume Writing - Do You Need to Capitalize on Your Degree? This article looks at resume writing, specifically when the term 'degree capitalized' is used. The intent of this article is to illustrate how this is a commonly used approach for education, medical and other resume writing, and highlight the benefits of using such strategies in achieving your objectives in gaining employment. To begin with, let's look at what 'degree capitalized' is. An academic term for this type of resume is 'English-Language-Acquired Resume'. This type of resume stands to be an alternative to traditional resumes that include an emphasis on academic ability, while simultaneously emphasizing professional accomplishments. The reason behind this is primarily due to the fact that these resumes make reference to academic-level education. Consequently, it makes more sense to use these, rather than traditional resumes that tend to focus on only professional achievements. Therefore, as you can see, the term 'degree c apitalized' is indicative of a strategy that works in conjunction with standard resume writing but can also work well with academic resumes as well. The thing to remember about this strategy is that, this is simply a variation on traditional resumes, and it is not to be used without these two elements. First, you need to have a comprehensive resume, one that has a good amount of content. Secondly, you need to have your 'evidence' properly substantiated, with specific verifiable proof to back up your employment application. Therefore, any 'degree capitalized' resume which lacks these two elements is not a good strategy, and you should refrain from using it.Essentially, a resume that contains this strategy is a variation of 'standard' resume, and only needs to add some type of data needs (e.g. references, references that can be independently verified, etc. ).This kind of strategy is really ideal for the specific person that is trying to obtain employment, and the person seeking employm ent. Now, if you are an employer that is looking for an employee, you want to ensure that your employee doesn't have some strange tactic involving their academic history. Therefore, the strategy above is great for anyone that wants to pursue employment, and yet they still don't want to show too much of a commitment to school or university. As a further note, this 'degree capitalized' technique is a great way to get an employer interested in what you have to offer, without the expense of hiring a full-time employee. Employers generally tend to prefer part-time employees, especially when they are only seeking temporary help.Indeed, the goal of this strategy is to allow the reader to quickly and easily see how impressive you are, without having to go through a lot of awkward or time-consuming sections. Additionally, if you put down a good impression, the more likely you are to be hired.

Leaving Your Job Safeguard Your Reputation!
Leaving Your Job Safeguard Your Reputation! Leave a strong reputation behind People leave jobs for many reasons: to get a better salary. To take the next career step. To get away from a terrible boss (#1 reason!). Whatever the reason, when you leave a job, your reputation in that company and with those co-workers will be heavily impacted by the way you leave. Follow these steps to safeguard your reputation once you are gone. Why should you bother? Because your reputation follows you like your shadow. Career progression is all about networking. The business world is small. Industries are even smaller. The same people can appear again and again in your career. Itâs more than needing references from past employers. If you recruit talent in your new role (or a subsequent one), or look for another job yourself later on, you will probably come across them again. Make sure their first thoughts of you are positive. 3 Musts When Leaving your Job Complete as much as you can before you go Donât dump work on the people left behind. Complete as many of your outstanding reports and projects as you can. Do the work well. These documents represent you after you leave the company. Would you prefer that your former colleagues say âoh, Jill did that report, weâll have to do it overâ or âJill did that report, we can rely on itâ? What they see of your work will shape their memories of you. Set your successor up for success For anything you canât finish before leaving your job, or for regular ongoing tasks, prepare a transition plan. If your successor is hired, do your best to get them up to speed before you leave. If you donât meet your successor, leave complete notes so they can find your files and meet the key people on projects. Set them up for success to make a positive impression. Keep it professional In the days leading up to your departure, it can be hard to stay emotionally level. Do it anyway, at least on the outside. Donât gloat if you are going to a better place. Donât wail and complain if you are not. If your company culture includes a farewell coffee, host it and thank everyone for the good times and shared successes. Donât ramble on about what happens next for you. Farewells are really about the people who are staying. Move on Strongly Within 6 months of leaving your job, most of your current colleagues will not think of you at all. Thatâs just human nature; in your new job, you wont think about them either. The last work you do, the last interactions you have before leaving, can outweigh years of working together. Make that a strong impression and you leave many doors open for the future.

How Do You Succeed On A Personal Level And A Business Level -
How Do You Succeed On A Personal Level And A Business Level - As an entrepreneur, you still have a career, much like any of your employees, but you also have a lot of responsibility. Being your own boss frees you from the restrictions of employment, but that also means you have to juggle your business responsibilities with your personal life. Ordinary working professionals struggle with this, too, but business owners often find that they have very little spare time on their hands. Being entrepreneurial and career-driven can take a toll on your wellbeing if you donât keep your life well-balanced. In this article, youâll find some suggestions to help you succeed on a personal level and a business level. Keep doing your research. Firstly, you need to keep doing your research. If you think you know everything about your industry and your target market, then youâre wrong. Every marketplace changes over time; the business world adapts to changes in society and technology. You need to keep up if you want to ensure that your entrepreneurial ventures are successful. Otherwise, your business could be left behind. Never assume you know enough to stay at the top of your game; you need to constantly seek knowledge. Keep studying and training yourself in new areas. Thatâs how youâll be a successful entrepreneur. And take the advice of other successful entrepreneurs. Career-driven professionals, such as Cynthia Telles, always discuss the circumstances in life that motivated them. Itâs important to find your motivation and inspiration. Perhaps the success of other entrepreneurs who have been in a similar situation to you could be enough to encourage you. Whatever the case, researching other business professionals in the industry, collecting data on consumers, and keeping up with product or service advancements are things that will help you to succeed on a personal level and a business level. Balance your work life and family life. Itâs also wise to balance your work life and family life if you want to be successful. You might find yourself becoming a bit of a workaholic if you want your business to do well, but itâs important to not neglect your personal life. Spending time with your loved ones is incredibly valuable. They remind us why we work so hard in the first place. Make time for your family, so you can return to your work feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. You should also make time for your friends (and not just to ânetworkâ). Any sort of social life is important if you want to improve your mental health; the simple act of laughing can improve the health of your heart, too, so there are physical benefits to spending time with the important people in your life. Enjoy what you do. Above all else, make sure you enjoy what you do. Otherwise, whatâs the point in working so hard? You could have an ordinary career and make enough money to cover your costs of living, but running a business is a move made by working professionals who have a passion for a particular idea that they want to introduce to the world. Caring about the product or the service youâre selling is vital if you want your brand to do well. Remember, you and your employees are representatives of your brand, so you need to genuinely enjoy the work you do. Or, at the very least, you need to care about the business and its overall objectives, even if a lot of the work can be exhausting.

20+ Best UI Developer Interview Questions - Algrim.co
20+ Best UI Developer Interview Questions - Algrim.co The UI Developer is a fairly new role in the technology organization. If you are interested in trying to secure this role, Iâve provided a list of UI Developer interview questions and answers which can help you prepare for your upcoming interview. The person you interview with will most likely sit on the product development organization or team. They are someone who is going to be part of the product team as a whole, this is basically the team responsible for the development of web or mobile applications that address customer needs. The UI Developer role is a newer one, weâll go into why it has been created and what some of the benefits to the role are as well. Why the role has been created Recently, this role has been created because the demand for high levels of design has increased. Or a better way to describe this is that consumers or customers are expecting UI design to be extremely high class. That means if a designer is constantly tasked with the development of their UI, they might either risk the ability to focus on developing amazing pieces of work or fail to deliver what their front-end and engineering team requires in order to get the job done. That has made a new opportunity exist, the UI developer. This person sits right in between the engineering team and the designer to help translate beautiful pieces of UI into something that the engineering team can pick up very quickly and start creating logic for. As teams become larger, this role becomes more critical as well. Because that person helps bridge the gap between any of the designs currently being worked on as well as prior logic or functionality which might exist inside the application. Without it, the e ngineering team might be left with a lot of questions and ultimately this slows down their ability to produce great work. Lastly, if that does exist, then there becomes some contention between the designers and the engineering team, which executive leaders in the product management part of the organization always want to avoid. A helpful video Before we begin looking at interview questions, I like to provide you the visitor with a video that speaks to the role in question. Ideally this should help you in understanding how to communicate your value of the position to the person you are interviewing with. Hopefully you find the video below helpful before you dig into the interview questions themselves. UI Developer Interview Questions Table of Contents 1. What JavaScript libraries would you use for interactive elements in a web application? 21. Would you choose JavaScript for your UI views? 1. How would you describe the UI Developer role? The role of the UI Developer is to help the design and engineering team create a more synergetic relationship. For instance, if the designer isnât familiar with all of the backend engineering an application, they are going to have a more difficult time changing or evolving parts of the web application. Because of this, theyâll essentially have less time to create wonderful and well-working UI designs that can serve the needs of our customers. The UI Developer, in short, helps turn UI designs into reality by developing the closer to front-end requirements a piece of UI may have. 2. Who is it that you help? The UI developer helps two people, the backend engineers, and the designer. The reason for this is that the backend engineers and even front-end engineers would be experiencing a lot of friction if they had to guess what the designer was attempting to do with their work, all the while creating the backend engineering logic to meet requirements. It leaves too many open-ended questions that donât facilitate the creation of great work from either end of the spectrum. In this sense, this services both the engineering department and the design department. 3. Do you need to know a lot of code? UI Developers do need a healthy understanding of code. Most front-end frameworks should be of knowledge. HTML, HTML5, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, Jquery, React and many more. This person also needs to have a very good eye for detail as they are going to be dissecting the UI elements and turning them into functioning front-end code for backend engineers to pick up. The eye for detail I would say is more important than the knowledge of a lot of code. 4. What types of code languages should you be familiar with? HTML, HTML5, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, Jquery, React, Node, Python, iOS, Swift and a few more. 5. How do you go about understanding the app architecture? The ways a UI developer can go about understanding the backend architecture is by inspecting a few different parts to the application. The first one would be the tests inside the application. This gives the UI developer a level of insight into what logic the application has and what core functionality is trying to be served to the user. Also, interviewing the engineering department is another way, but can be a bit intrusive sometimes. The other way is to be looking through the models and the controllers of the application to understand the logic in more detail. This should give a general understanding of the architecture behind the application and give the UI Developer a little more knowledge about what to be prepared to do when the designer makes changes or redesigns to the applications UI. 6. Should you use emâs or spans for web application images? Ideally you would use spans. Sometimes there are restrictions to using other HTML elements as pseudo-elements for UI images but in many cases, the span is the best element to use. 7. How much do you need to know about web accessibility? Understanding web accessibility is a big part of the UI developer role. Because we want all people, regardless of their potential disabilities to be able to use our products. Being able to translate UI elements into functioning front-end prototypes that are accessible by not only all devices but all handicaps is extremely critical. 8. What are spec sheets? Spec sheets are informational diagrams or pieces of information provided by the designer that tells engineering departments what they would expect to happen if users clicked or participated in certain events on their designs. This gives engineering teams the ability to reference the intentions of the designer without them being present. 9. What prototyping tools should you use? There are a variety of prototyping tools that are available on the market today. Some of the favorites of UI Developers would be Proto.io, FramerJS, InvisionApp, Moqups and many more. 10. What is TDD and how does it impact your role as a UI Developer? TDD refers to Testing Driven Development. This when developers write tests to their code while its in development. UI Developers need to have a firm understanding of this type of engineering as they will be changing the way that tests either pass or fail as part of the application. 11. What is MVC? MVC stands for Model, View, Controller. This is the main way that most application frameworks have been developed. It's important for UI Developers to understand these frameworks as they often work within the view and controller part of the application. Having a good grasp of MVC theories as a whole is a critical component to success in the position. 12. Do UI Developers work within application views? Yes, absolutely. UI Developers work within the application views because that is where the UI elements are executed. It is where the front-end designs are essentially accessed by the user. A view is a sort of HTML document that is executed under certain conditions. This is where UI Developers will be spending most of their time. 13. How do you interface with designers about work in progress? Its important for the UI Developer to interface with designers frequently. There needs to be a high touchpoint between the design and the UI Development phase. Essentially, the UI Developer and the designer need to work in tandem, ensuring that requirements are met and that expectations are managed. The more the UI Developer can be closely integrated with the designer in the design phase, the better off everyone will be. 14. What are some ways you can confirm backend functionality? Confirming backend functionality is hard to do when interfaces are being changed dramatically. The best thing to do is to make sure the UI Developer is part of the SCRUM and to ensure they are on the daily stand-ups. This is where functionality is often discussed and if something changes, it is brought to the attention of everyone on these events. 15. What front-end frameworks do you know? jQuery, Rails, HAML, SASS, LESS, React, Redux. Its important in this question to be really upfront about which frameworks you have experience with. Its okay if you don't have experience with them all, showing that you have experience with some and the desire or passion to learn more will be enough. It can also be helpful if you explain in your off-time that you learn new programming languages and frameworks for fun. This can show future employers that you are always willing to develop yourself further and that they should take a risk on you because of your passion with the space and education you'll receive. 16. What is LESS and SASS? These are abbreviations for frameworks which compile CSS. I should say that they donât just compile CSS but also extend their functionality through uniformity. For instance, if a company has a set of brand colors that they use, LESS and SASS allow those colors to be referenced only one in the CSS and then accessed in the places it needs to be. Meaning, if the company decides it wants to change its colors from black to white, with a one line change, that can happen in all of the places where the color black is referenced. 17. What is HAML? HAML is a front-end framework for extending HTML documents usually inside Ruby on Rails applications. It's there to make the readability of long HTML files more affordable to engineers. This means, making it easier to read and thus easier to work with. There are a variety of frameworks and extensions like this available on the market to help efficiently increase the readability of code in hopes that it helps engineers manage larger applications more easily. 18. If you create a button should you use a link or a button class? Ideally you should create a button class. Per web accessibility standards, you want to use the button function in HTML whenever you have a button in use. Sometimes, though, you are not able to use a button class if there is extremely unique types of functionality. Only then should you use a link class. 19. What is the hamburger icon? The hamburger icon refers to a three-lined piece of iconography that opens up top-level navigation for a web site or application. It is a recent UI pattern that has seen some surface of popularity in the past 5 years. 20. What JavaScript libraries would you use for interactive elements in a web application? Ideally, jQuery is your go to library of choice. jQuery and jQuery animate comes with a variety of animation tools which helps you to build interactive elements within a web application. Any other tools for this job are probably not necessary. 21. Would you choose JavaScript for your UI views? This is a somewhat loaded question. Ideally, you should use any front-end language that is most efficient for the job. This is called a polyglot approach. Although, you may not be able to do that depending on who and what the application is built with regarding the backend engineering and logic. But with regard to JavaScript, in particular, it is a very lightweight programming language. So it is a great choice if the rest of the application is already built with JavaScript. Conclusion The UI Developer role is a fun position to be in, you have the ability to help the whole engineering department build better applications more efficiently. You help the creative people in the product management organization be more creative and you also help the engineer teams manage their time better. You are a critical part of the team. UI Developers can also fail to help the teams they support if they donât consider both parties, if they are too concerned about the design and not as concerned with helping the engineering team facilitate their requirements, they will make it very difficult for new products to get created. It's important that this roles serves both parties and are part of both the product design process as well as the engineering process. Meaning, they may be part of the explorations and discussions of where product designs need to take the product as well as the discussions that happen about the engineering after the design has been confirmed as ready for develop ment by the executive team. Youâll be in a very transitional role, going through many parts of the software development team. Being prepared for the UI Developer interview Being prepared for your job interview as a UI Developer is pretty simple, the first thing you should know is what products this company has in development or already in the market. You should be able to find this out by looking up the company, understanding what products and solutions they deliver and if its a consumer-driven company, installing the applications yourself. The use of the applications will give you the best knowledge of what their future needs might be with UI Development. This should help you get prepared to answer questions related to specific products, for instance when they ask you how you might be able to improve the UI or code of X product. The other thing that you should have is a portfolio of work. You wonât have the creative UI work in your portfolio, but you should have the application front-end experiences ready to either be accessed or a series of screenshots that you can show. If you can show off at least some web applications and some mobile application s, youâll have a higher chance of being hired. Any UI Developer with Swift experience is going to be in really high demand. On all interview questions If you have any other UI Developer interview questions or answers that youâd like to see listed on this page, please feel free to contact me. With all of these questions and answers it's important that you recognize that they are for practice sessions only. You should come up with your own set of answers to these questions and put together a practice scenario for which you deliver them. Your confidence in the delivery of the answers will go much further than your reiteration of the questions above.
